Understanding Human Trafficking and Its Impact on Colorado Communities

Understanding Human Trafficking and Its Impact on Colorado Communities

As part of National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, experts are shedding light on the complexities of human trafficking and its troubling prevalence in Colorado. Despite common misconceptions, human trafficking is widespread, even in metropolitan areas like Denver.

We know it’s happening everywhere — downtown, online, in schools — but often, people don’t recognize it,” said Ashley Morgan, leader of the Denver District Attorney’s Human Trafficking Unit.

Morgan works closely with investigators and task forces to prosecute trafficking cases.

She emphasized that trafficking involves coercing victims into commercial sex or forced labor through threats, withholding essentials, or psychological manipulation.

Challenges in Prosecuting Traffickers

Prosecutors face numerous hurdles in these cases, especially when victims fear testifying due to dependency on their traffickers or fear of violence.

Morgan stressed the importance of building strong cases without relying solely on victim testimony, though this isn’t always possible.

Victims are often coerced into illegal activities, but the DA’s office prioritizes addressing their victimization rather than punishing them for these acts.

Survivor Stories

Jade, a sex trafficking survivor, shared her harrowing decade-long experience. Coerced through what initially appeared to be a romantic relationship, she described strict control over every aspect of her life, from diet to appearance.

“I wasn’t allowed to see my family, and I was isolated,” Jade recalled. “I was taught how to speak and rewarded for doing the most.”

With support from the DA’s office and organizations like From Silenced to Saved, Jade has reclaimed her life.

I want to close this chapter and write a new book,” she said.

The Role of Organized Efforts

Since the formation of the DA’s Human Trafficking Unit, the number of trafficking cases prosecuted has risen.

Labor trafficking has been found in industries like farming and hospitality, while sex trafficking often starts through social media recruitment.

Colorado’s transportation hubs, including Denver International Airport, facilitate trafficking circuits across major cities, making the state a hotspot.

Justice and Deterrence

One of the longest sentences for human trafficking in the U.S. was handed down in Colorado last summer. Robert Earl Hawkins received 448 years in prison for trafficking both adults and juveniles.

“Sentences like that send a strong message,” said Denver District Attorney John Walsh.

As efforts continue to combat human trafficking, authorities stress the importance of raising awareness and strengthening state laws to protect vulnerable populations.
