The Blatnik Bridge Reconstruction project, which received over $1 billion in federal funds through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, could face delays due to an executive order signed by President Donald Trump during his first days in office.
The executive order requires agencies receiving federal funds to submit a detailed report for review within 90 days, effectively pausing disbursement of funds.
This decision has drawn mixed reactions from politicians across Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Minnesota U.S. Senator Tina Smith expressed frustration, stating, “I don’t believe the president has the power to stop implementation of a law.” She emphasized that the freeze is unnecessary and disrupts agreements established under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Despite her concerns, she remains hopeful, saying, “I have to believe the law will prevail and get this project done.”
Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin echoed Smith’s sentiments. In a statement, Baldwin promised to stand against efforts to halt infrastructure projects, asserting that she would fight to ensure funding for Wisconsin communities and families.
Meanwhile, Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin supports the review process, arguing that some projects funded under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law may not qualify as infrastructure.
He cited the installation of electric vehicle chargers as an example. However, Tiffany expressed confidence that the Blatnik Bridge project will secure its funding due to its clear alignment with traditional infrastructure needs.
Minnesota Representative Pete Stauber also supports the review process, stating that projects like the Blatnik Bridge will be funded because of their significant regional impact. “I applaud the Trump Administration for conducting reviews that will ensure American taxpayers’ money is spent wisely,” Stauber said.
Duluth Mayor Roger Reinert released a statement indicating he is in active discussions with federal representatives and hopes for swift clarification to move the project forward.
The Blatnik Bridge project, a crucial infrastructure endeavor connecting Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin, is widely seen as a high-priority initiative.
As the review process unfolds, regional leaders remain hopeful that the funding will proceed without significant delays.
