An “all-American” family of four was found dead in their Ruffsdale, Pennsylvania home in what authorities are calling a tragic murder-suicide.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, 35-year-old Paul Swarner is suspected of fatally shooting his wife, Karen Swarner, 32, and their two children, Evelyn, 5, and Connor, 1, before turning the gun on himself.
The discovery was made Thursday night by Karen’s father after family members were unable to reach the couple.
“It’s unthinkable. It’s unfathomable,” said State Trooper Steve Limani during a press conference on Friday.
All four family members were found in the same room, and investigators recovered a Ruger .22 handgun, believed to be the weapon used in the incident.
Family members reported having spoken to the couple just a day prior, with no indication of trouble. “There was no strife, no fear of endangerment, nothing that raised any concern,” Limani said.
Police revealed that neither Paul nor Karen had any criminal history or prior records of domestic violence. “They seemed like a loving family with successful careers. Their home reflected a happy household, filled with toys for the children,” Limani added.
Neighbors expressed their heartbreak over the tragedy. Dick Shawley, who lived near the family, tearfully recalled his interactions with them. “I gave gifts to the kids this past Christmas and played Santa for them. They were always so happy.”
The Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office is working closely with investigators to determine the timeline of events and provide answers to grieving family members.
The incident has left the quiet community in shock, mourning the loss of what appeared to be a joyful and loving family.
