Kevin White, a South Side Chicago native, credits TikTok with changing the trajectory of his career and personal life.
“TikTok has been a game changer for me as an event curator and host,” White shares. “It allowed me to reach thousands of people in Chicago who are searching for unique experiences and like-minded communities.”
White began his TikTok journey in March 2023, quickly amassing a following of nearly 124,000.
Since then, he’s launched his own event company, which continues to grow and scale, hiring team members to support its expansion.
“This wouldn’t have been possible without TikTok,” he says.
TikTok’s Unique Impact
White describes TikTok as revolutionary in how it facilitates discovery. Unlike traditional social media platforms that prioritize content from familiar connections, TikTok excels at introducing users to new ideas and experiences.
“It’s an app for discovery and reachability,” White explains, “while other platforms focus more on who you already know.”
Among his varied content, White’s Chicago restaurant reviews have been particularly impactful, driving substantial traffic to local businesses.
“Within 24 hours, the video received 60,000 views,” White recalls. “When I visited the restaurant the following week, they told me that hundreds of customers came in saying, ‘Kevin White sent us.’ That’s the kind of impact TikTok has on businesses.”
A Potential TikTok Ban and Its Implications
As discussions about banning TikTok in the U.S. continue, White expresses concern about how it could affect creators and local businesses.
“Tens, maybe hundreds of businesses in Chicago will feel the loss if TikTok goes away,” he says. “It’s a platform that has generated immense revenue and exposure for small and large businesses alike. That kind of reach isn’t easily replicated.”
White encourages creators to diversify their presence across multiple platforms to avoid being overly dependent on TikTok.
Months ago, he began transitioning to Instagram and advises others to explore alternatives as well.
“I tell creators to always ensure their eggs aren’t all in one basket. Build connections in your community and look for other ways to drive traffic and support local businesses.”
Looking Ahead
Despite his proactive approach, White believes no platform can fully replace TikTok’s unique capabilities.
“It’s going to leave a lasting impression,” he says. “Even if something else comes along, it won’t fill the void TikTok leaves behind.”
As for the future, White remains optimistic, committed to adapting, and determined to continue helping businesses and communities thrive through creative strategies, no matter what comes next.
