Texas Ghost Town Sold for $100K: Who buy It and Why?

For decades, the abandoned desert town of Lobo, Texas, captured the curiosity of dreamers and adventurers.

Now, the once-thriving railway stop has found new owners, Dennis and Bonnie Berry, a couple from Corpus Christi, who purchased it for $100,000 in October 2023.

The History of Lobo, Texas

Founded in the 1880s, Lobo was a bustling desert community and a critical railway watering stop.

At its peak, the town had a population of about 100. However, its decline began in the 1950s after the railroad was abandoned, and by 1991, Lobo had been completely deserted.

In 2001, three German friends bought the town, determined to breathe life back into it. Over the next two decades, they used Lobo as a venue for unique events such as art shows, short films, and music festivals, including the notable “Desert Dust Cinema.”

Why Was It Put Up for Sale?

The German owners decided to sell the property in 2023, citing their inability to continue restoration efforts due to aging.

The listing for the 10-acre town, located 130 miles southeast of El Paso and 15 miles east of the Rio Grande, drew worldwide attention.

Lobo features several structures, including a gas station, motel, grocery store, and abandoned houses, sparking creative visions from potential buyers. Ideas ranged from turning it into:

  • A kangaroo farm
  • An escape room experience
  • A desert-inspired art and music hub
  • A powerful radio tower
  • Sustainable agriculture and rental properties

Who Bought Lobo and What’s Next?

After much speculation, the town was purchased by Dennis and Bonnie Berry. While the couple hasn’t disclosed their specific plans, their investment rekindles hopes for Lobo’s revival.

For now, Lobo remains a blank canvas—a reminder of the allure and challenges of restoring a piece of Texas history.
