On his first day back in office, President Donald Trump declared a national emergency at the U.S. southern border and issued executive actions focused on immigration reform.
States are now grappling with how to implement his mass deportation agenda, with Tennessee at the forefront of these discussions.
Republican Governor Bill Lee recently unveiled an immigration agenda that will be presented to the state’s General Assembly during a special session scheduled for January 27.
“Tennessee has a strong history of securing our nation’s borders and enhancing public safety,” Lee stated. “President Trump has made it clear that states will play a critical role in enforcing immigration laws and protecting communities, and Tennessee is ready to step up.”
Key proposals in Governor Lee’s agenda include:
- Appointing a Chief Immigration Enforcement Officer: This role would coordinate directly with the Trump administration to align federal and state immigration policies.
- Encouraging Participation in the ICE 287(g) Program: This program allows local law enforcement to perform specific immigration enforcement functions under ICE oversight.
- Penalizing Sanctuary Policies: Local officials who implement or maintain sanctuary policies in violation of state law could face Class E felony charges.
Governor Lee’s initiative mirrors similar proposals made by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who also seeks to align his state’s policies with Trump’s immigration agenda.
However, opposition to these measures is growing. The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) has vowed to fight back, mobilizing the state’s immigrant community.
In a statement on social media, the group declared: “As Trump returns to the White House with his harmful rhetoric and policies, we remain committed to creating a stronger, more inclusive Tennessee.
Immigrants are vital to this country’s past, present, and future. Together, we will continue educating, fighting, and organizing to ensure everyone belongs and thrives.”
As Tennessee prepares for its special session, the debate over immigration reform highlights the deep divisions over how to address this critical issue.
