The Sterling Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team (SET) successfully arrested a suspect involved in a series of ATM skimming crimes on Friday, January 10th.
The arrest occurred around 6:30 PM after a coordinated investigation and surveillance operation.
The case began earlier that day when a local bank reported discovering a skimming device attached to one of its ATMs.
Investigators determined that the suspect had placed the device earlier in the week and returned multiple times to retrieve stolen card information.
After employing advanced investigative techniques and conducting surveillance, SET officers, in collaboration with the on-duty patrol team, were prepared for the suspect’s next move.
During the suspect’s fourth attempt to collect stolen data, 37-year-old Laurentiu Stefan Joita was apprehended without incident. Joita, a Romanian national who may currently reside in Colorado’s Front Range area, was taken into custody.
Charges Filed
Joita faces multiple charges, including:
- Identity Theft (CRS 18-5-902(2)(b)): A Class 5 Felony with 34 counts.
- Possession of Identity Theft Tools (CRS 18-5-905): A Class 6 Felony.
Details of the Scheme
Investigators discovered that Joita had carefully placed the skimming device on the ATM to capture unsuspecting customers’ card details. Over the following days, he returned several times to collect the compromised data.
Authorities believe this could be part of a broader criminal operation and are continuing to investigate the extent of Joita’s activities.
Public Advisory
The Sterling Police Department urges residents to remain vigilant when using ATMs and to report any unusual devices or suspicious behavior immediately. Signs of a potential skimming device include:
- Loose or unusually bulky card readers.
- Keypads that feel spongy or seem misaligned.
- Unusual attachments or cameras near the ATM.
Community members are encouraged to monitor their bank statements regularly for unauthorized transactions and to contact their bank and local law enforcement if they suspect fraud.
As the investigation continues, Sterling Police commend the efforts of their Special Enforcement Team and the local patrol officers for their swift and decisive actions in protecting the community. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
