But in November, an animal that hadn’t been spotted in the area for two years was photographed by a local wildlife photographer. The image is grainy, but it looks like a wolverine. There is an amazing diversity of species in Yellowstone National Park. However, the wolverine is one of the species that is rarely observed.
Wolverines are a rare sight in the national park, with a population of “a dozen or fewer” with only two females and five males documented. Even park cameras struggle to capture a glimpse of a wolverine; the last one in 2022 caused the camera to take a picture. For this reason, even a hazy photograph of a wolverine taken in Yellowstone is a cause for celebration.
Tom Sizemore, a Montana-based wildlife photographer, captured a stunning shot on his car’s dashcam on November 13, 2024. It was a picture of a wolverine from Yellowstone.
Sizemore first believed the animal to be a wolf, but upon closer inspection, he saw that it was too little and low to the ground to be the top predator. At that moment, Sizemore recognized what he was seeing: a wolverine.
“It was dark in color, had a noticeable tail, was the size of a small wolf, but much lower to the ground. It loped across the road more like a wolverine than a wolf.” – Tom Sizemore
In or close to Yellowstone National Park, this is only the third occasion a wolverine has been photographed.
Two of the sightings have occurred in snowy conditions, where the wolverines’ ability to blend in is diminished. The third took place in a heavily forested section of the national park.
Because wolverines are so elusive, Sizemore is unlikely to have another contact with them, which makes it truly unique.
