Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is making headlines again, signaling a potential return to Georgia politics and teasing a possible run for governor.
Bottoms’ announcement follows a recent claim by President Donald Trump that he had fired her from her senior advisory position in the Biden administration.
In an interview with Channel 2’s Jorge Estevez, Bottoms clarified that she had resigned from her role on January 4, 2025, effective January 20, before Trump’s inauguration.
“I was quite tickled to see the president of the United States thinking of me the day after his historic inauguration,” Bottoms said, dismissing Trump’s claim as inaccurate.
When asked about her political future, Bottoms confirmed that she is considering a return to Georgia politics. “When I left the mayor’s office, I always said, ‘Never say never,’” she shared. Pressed about what position she might pursue, Bottoms hinted at the upcoming governor’s race with a laugh.
“There will be a governor’s race on the ballot,” she said, suggesting that the role is a possibility.
With current Governor Brian Kemp ineligible for a third term, the 2026 Georgia governor’s race will feature new candidates from both parties.
When asked if Georgia is ready for a female governor, especially one who is a woman of color, Bottoms responded confidently: “Absolutely. Absolutely.”
While she focuses on her potential political comeback, Bottoms also expressed her hopes for the success of the new administration.
She mentioned key issues like inflation, the war in Ukraine, and immigration reform as critical challenges facing the country.
Bottoms, who served as Atlanta’s mayor from 2018 to 2022, remains a prominent figure in Georgia politics and could emerge as a strong contender in the state’s future elections.
