A recall for Great Value Chicken Broth, sold in Walmart stores across nine U.S. states, has been categorized as a “Class II” risk by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The broth, manufactured by TreeHouse Foods, Inc., faced recall due to packaging issues that could compromise sterility and lead to spoilage.
What Does a Class II Recall Mean?
According to the FDA, a Class II recall refers to situations where exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects. The probability of serious health consequences is considered remote.
Details of the Recall
- States Affected: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
- Best If Used By Dates: March 25, 2026.
- Lot Code: 98F09234.
- UPC Codes:
- Retail Unit: 007874206684
- Case: 078742066844
The recall was initiated on December 11, 2024, and the FDA classified it on January 21, 2025.
Why the Recall Was Issued
TreeHouse Foods identified potential packaging failures that could allow bacteria, yeasts, and molds to contaminate the broth, making it unsafe for consumption.
While spoilage may sometimes be visible through changes in appearance, taste, or texture, contaminated products can also appear normal while posing health risks.
TreeHouse Foods’ Statement and Past Issues
TreeHouse Foods previously faced recalls in October 2024 for gluten-free waffles under the Nature’s Path brand. These were linked to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
In response to the earlier issue, TreeHouse Foods stated:
“The Brantford, Ontario facility has undergone a hygienic restoration and is once again producing griddle products for our customers.”
Consumers who have purchased the affected broth are urged to dispose of it or return it to the store for a refund. For additional questions, contact TreeHouse Foods or refer to the FDA’s website for updates.
