Deadline Alert: NJ Residents Must Act Now to Secure Health Coverage!

If you haven’t signed up for health insurance for 2025 yet, now is the time to do it. New Jersey’s official health insurance marketplace, Get Covered New Jersey, has seen a huge increase in sign-ups for the 2025 coverage period, with over 481,000 people enrolled in the first nine weeks. But the open enrollment period is ending soon. If you live in New Jersey and still need to enroll, extra events are being held to help you.

The deadline for signing up for health coverage is January 31, 2025. That means you don’t have much time to act if you want to get coverage for the new year. The Department of Banking and Insurance in New Jersey is organizing additional pop-up enrollment events at shopping malls across the state to help residents understand the process and complete their applications before the deadline.

Governor Phil Murphy established Get Covered New Jersey as the official marketplace for the state’s residents, and the Department of Banking and Insurance operates it. The health plans available through the marketplace cover a wide range of important services. These include preventive care, emergency services, prescription drugs, prenatal and pediatric care, and much more.

Record Number of Sign-Ups

Since the open enrollment period began on November 1, 2024, there have already been more than 481,000 sign-ups. This includes both new sign-ups and automatic renewals. This year’s sign-ups are already 31% higher than last year’s total by this time.

As of January 2, 2025, 145,330 new or existing consumers selected a plan, while 335,821 residents renewed their coverage. This record-high number shows that more people are taking advantage of affordable health insurance options through Get Covered New Jersey.

The program has been especially popular because of the significant financial help it offers. Over 90% of people who sign up for coverage qualify for some form of financial assistance. On average, each person receives $596 per month in financial help, which adds up to $7,152 per year. Many people are even able to find a plan that costs $10 per month or less, making it easier than ever to afford quality health coverage.

What’s New for 2025?

This year, Get Covered New Jersey is offering a few new benefits for residents:

  • Affordable Insulin: All health plans now cap out-of-pocket costs for insulin at $35 per month.
  • Cheaper EpiPens and Asthma Inhalers: The out-of-pocket costs for these important medications are also capped. You’ll pay no more than $25 for EpiPens and $50 for asthma inhalers for a month’s supply.
  • Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) Recipients: A new federal policy now allows DACA recipients in New Jersey to apply for health coverage through Get Covered New Jersey.

Additionally, for those who enrolled by December 31, 2024, their coverage began on January 1, 2025. Anyone who enrolls before the final deadline on January 31, 2025, will have their health coverage start on February 1, 2025.

More Assistance is Available

The open enrollment period may be ending soon, but there’s still time to sign up. If you haven’t done so yet, you can attend one of the pop-up events being held across the state.
