Countryside Police Chief Paul Klimek is seeking financial support to offset the cost of equipping his department with body and in-car cameras.

At the January 8 city council meeting, Chief Klimek requested authorization to apply for a grant to reimburse the city $26,703 for its recent camera purchases. The council unanimously approved the grant application.

The cameras, manufactured by Motorola, include 25 body cameras and seven in-car cameras.

These tools have already been distributed to officers, marking a significant step forward in enhancing transparency and accountability in the department.

Valuable Tools for Law Enforcement

After the council meeting, Chief Klimek highlighted the importance of these devices for modern policing. “They’re probably one of the best things to happen to law enforcement,” Klimek said. “It’s irrefutable evidence—whether it’s for crime investigations or in cases where people file complaints against officers. It captures great evidence to have in court.”

Most officers wear their body cameras attached to their vests, while the in-car cameras are mounted on dashboards.

Vehicles equipped with “cages” for detaining prisoners also feature cameras in the back to ensure comprehensive monitoring.

Compliance with State Law
The implementation of body cameras aligns with the requirements of the Illinois SAFE-T Act, which mandates that all police officers in the state must wear body cameras as of January 1, 2025.

The law aims to enhance transparency and build trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

Next Steps for Funding
If approved, the grant would reimburse the city for the cost of the cameras, reducing the financial burden on local taxpayers.

By pursuing external funding, the Countryside Police Department demonstrates its commitment to maintaining high standards of accountability while managing resources efficiently.

The city council’s unanimous support for the grant application underscores the shared priority of enhancing public safety and fostering trust between law enforcement and the community.

As Chief Klimek continues to advocate for advanced tools and compliance with state mandates, the addition of body and in-car cameras marks a pivotal moment for policing in Countryside.

With this initiative, Countryside’s police force is poised to set an example for other departments navigating the evolving landscape of law enforcement technology and accountability.
