In a shocking and horrifying case, a 56-year-old man from Minnesota has been arrested for the alleged fatal stabbing his own mother to death and dismembering her body.

Troy Michael Mitteness is facing charges of second-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of his 82-year-old mother, Sandra Viola Mitteness. The gruesome fatal stabbing came to light when investigators discovered tote bins along the state highway containing dismembered body parts belonging to the victim. According to court documents, the investigation initially began as a probe into mail theft, in which Mitteness was a suspect. It was during this investigation that authorities discovered funds from the theft had been deposited into his mother’s bank account.

Detectives attempted to speak with Sandra Mitteness but were given conflicting information about her whereabouts and ultimately learned she had allegedly died in June 2022, following the fatal stabbing. Subsequent search warrants revealed bloodstains in the house and on a mattress, leading to Mitteness confessing to the the fatal stabbing. He admitted to researching methods on how to kill an elderly person before the fatal stabbing of his mother in her sleep. Mitteness then dismembered her body after the fatal stabbing and discarded the remains in tote bins along the highway to avoid detection. He is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court later this month. The disturbing nature of this case has left the community in shock, and authorities continue their investigation to ensure justice is served for Sandra Viola Mitteness.
