New Jersey police say a high school teacher is facing a lot of horrible charges because they think she had a child with a 13-year-old boy.
A press statement from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday said that 34-year-old fifth-grade teacher Laura Caron is being charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault, and second-degree endangerment to the welfare of a child.
The child is said to have been abused from 11 to 15 years old while living with Caron in her South Jersey home.
ABC Philadelphia reports that Caron is thought to have had a sexual relationship with one of her students while she taught him and his brother in the fifth grade.
This was already scary, but it got even worse in 2019 when the victim, who was 13 at the time, moved in with Caron, who was 28. Authorities think that this is when the teacher got pregnant with the teen’s child.
Investigators say the case started to get more attention on social media when the victim’s father said on Facebook in December 2024 that he thought his son and Caron’s 5-year-old child looked a lot alike.
Caron is from Warrington Township, which is on the edge of Philadelphia. He was a college basketball star for the private Catholic school Cabrini University, which closed in 2024 when it was merged with Villanova. Her major was teaching grade school.
According to court papers seen by ABC Philadelphia, the alleged victim’s family became friendly with Caron and started letting their kids stay with her once a week. Eventually, things got worse, and from 2016 to 2020, the kids lived with the suspect full-time.
Authorities say that the victims’ siblings told them that their brother had been sharing the same bed with Caron since he was 11 years old and had seen hidden behavior and sexual assaults happen in the home.
The abused child allegedly texted his sister to say that Caron had abused him and that he had fathered a child. During a police interview, he said it again.
People say that Caron and the victim were still talking until last month when his father posted the news on Facebook.
A news release said that Caron was arrested on Wednesday “without incident” by the Middle Township Police Department, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Special Victims Unit.
Caron was charged by prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland, who said, “This arrest shows how committed our office and our law enforcement partners are to protecting the children in our community.”
“People put a lot of trust in teachers, and the accusations in this case are a very troubling breach of that trust.
“We are going to do everything we can to get justice and help the victim and their family through this.”
Right now, Caron is being held at the Cape May County Correctional Facility until her first court date.
She could spend 10 to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison if she is found guilty of aggravated sexual attack and an extra 5 to 10 years in prison for the other two charges.
Police told reporters that the Middle Township School District had been told and was working with them. Families, students, and staff who the news may touch are now able to get counseling and other support services.
David Salvo, the superintendent of schools in Middle Township, has commented on The Independent.
